🖋️ Quick Start Guide to Journaling

Journaling helps you process thoughts, explore creativity, track habits, or simply unwind. There’s no wrong way to do it; your journal is a judgment-free zone just for you.

Supplies Needed

  • Paper – Any notebook works! Lined, dotted (bullet), blank, or even digital. You can always fold some standard blank pages in half to make a booklet if you aren’t ready to commit to a full journal yet.
  • A pen or pencil – Choose one that feels good to write with. Bonus points for fun gel pens or colored markers.
  • Optional: Stickers, washi tape, highlighters, stamps, paints, scraps of pretty paper, or printable templates for creative flair.

Common Journaling Terms

  • Prompt – A question or idea to help you get started writing.
  • Spread – A full two-page layout (common in bullet or creative journals).
  • Brain dump – A free write session where you jot down everything on your mind.
  • Daily log – A short, dated entry to track thoughts, moods, or events.
  • Habit tracker – A chart or checklist to keep tabs on daily habits.
  • Reflection – Writing about past events, feelings, or lessons learned.
  • Gratitude list – A list of things you’re thankful for, big or small.
  • Bullet journal (BuJo) – A customizable system combining planning, to-dos, and self-reflection using symbols and collections.

📝 How to Start

  1. Set a vibe. Find a quiet space, make a cup of tea, or put on a cozy playlist.
  2. Pick a time. Morning pages, bedtime wind-down, or random bursts—it’s up to you.
  3. Choose a method:
    • Freewriting – Write nonstop for 5–10 minutes. No edits, no overthinking.
    • Use a prompt – Start with something like:
      • “Today, I noticed…”
      • “Right now, I feel…”
      • “If I could visit anywhere…”
    • Lists – 3 things you're grateful for, songs stuck in your head, books you want to read.
    • Trackers – Mood, habits, sleep, dreams.

Tips for Staying Consistent

  • Keep it short. Even a few words a day counts!
  • Try a theme day (e.g., “Mood Monday” or “Thankful Thursday”).
  • Use stickers or doodles to keep things playful.
  • Don’t worry about perfection. Miss a day? No big deal—just pick up where you left off.

Your journal is yours. It can be messy, colorful, deep, silly, structured—or all of the above. Start small, stay curious, and have fun along the way.
